On September 13, 2024, Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) successfully conducted its first total knee replacement surgery. The hospital’s Orthopaedics Sub-BMC team performed the surgery on a 58-year-old woman who had been suffering from severe knee pain, especially at night, for the past three years.
Growing Expertise in Orthopaedics
This significant achievement comes after the team’s earlier success with total hip replacement surgeries. TTH is quickly building its reputation for handling complex orthopaedic procedures. Dr. (Med) Alatiga John Abanga, a leading orthopaedic surgeon at TTH, praised the team’s efforts and highlighted the hospital’s growing capabilities in orthopaedic care.
Call to Seek Treatment
Dr. Abanga encouraged people suffering from hip and knee pain to seek medical assistance at TTH. He stated, “TTH has the expertise to conduct total knee and hip replacement surgeries, and I want to encourage the public with these conditions to come to TTH for treatment.”
Special Appeal to the Muslim Community
Dr. Abanga also made a special appeal to the Muslim community in northern Ghana. He noted that untreated knee or hip pain could greatly affect their ability to observe prayers, often involving physical movement.
Commitment to Quality Care
TTH continues to improve its medical services, offering life-changing surgeries that enhance the quality of life for patients in Ghana. The hospital remains committed to providing high-quality orthopaedic care and other essential medical services.
